Lettens Jan02/01/2013On July 17th 1944, I-166, a KD5 type submarine, was torpedoed and sunk by the British submarine HMS Telemachus in the Strait of Malacca.

One torpedo hits the stern of I-166, causing a violent explosion. The submarine sinks in 130 feet of water.

88 sailors were killed in the explosion. Ten others, including Lt. Suwa and the navigating officer, are blown overboard. Seven hours later they are picked up by Malayan fishermen

Lettens Jan07/12/2009On December 24th 1941, HIJMS SAGIRI, a Fubuki class destroyer, was torpedoed and sunk by the Dutch submarine K-XVI, near Kuching, Sarawak. The aft magazine exploded, killing 121 crew. SHIRAKUMO and Minesweeper No.3 rescued 120 survivors, including Commander Sugioka.

On the same day, however, K-XVI will be torpedoed by I-66 (later I-166).

I-166 on her turn, will be torpedoed by HMS TELEMACHUS on July 17th 1944.
